Laurent Blanc and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer early favourites for caretaker manager role – reports
Manchester United will not make an internal appointment for the caretaker manager position after Jose Mourinho was sacked on Tuesday morning.
The club, according to reports, believes Michael Carrick, Nicky Butt or Kieran McKenna, who all hold coaching positions, are not experienced enough to assume the role.
According to ESPN‘s Mark Ogden and others, Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is considered the primary candidate to take over on a permanent basis.
That is hardly surprising. A more ambiguous notion is who will assume the caretaker role until the end of the season.
The majority of sources – including the Mirror, Times and Independent – are claiming Laurent Blanc, former Paris Saint Germain boss and Man United centre back, is the favourite to take over.
However, reputable journalists like the Telegraph‘s Sam Wallace and the Guardian‘s Jamie Jackson have reported that United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the leading candidate to succeed Mourinho on a temporary basis. The Norwegian would immediately strike a chord with supporters and his first game would be against Cardiff City, where he endured a poor six months as manager back in 2014.
The club intends to announce a caretaker within the next 24 to 48 hours.
